What is an AI chief of staff, and which apps actually do it?
Updated
Short answer: An AI chief of staff is software that reads your email, chat and meetings and keeps track of what you owe and are owed: replies, follow-ups, promises and decisions, with drafts and briefings so nothing slips. For an individual on a Mac, Lowtide is our pick; alfred_ and Fyxer do much of the same for email-first work, Superhuman Go is a general AI agent across your apps, and Sentra builds a shared memory for a whole company.
What does a chief of staff do that software can copy?
- Keeps track of every commitment: what you promised, to whom, by when, and what others promised you.
- Prepares you before each meeting: what you owe the people in it and what you last agreed.
- Follows up, so nobody has to remind you twice.
- Filters what reaches you, so you see what needs you and not everything that arrived.
- Drafts the reply, the nudge and the recap, and leaves the decision to you.
What to look for
- It finds commitments on its own, rather than only answering when you ask.
- It covers where your work actually happens: email, chat, meetings, and your team’s tools.
- Its drafts sound like you, and it never sends without you.
- It closes things when they’re done, so the list stays short enough to trust.
- It says why each item is there, so you can tell what matters at a glance.
Apps that do some or all of it
| App | For | Where it looks | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lowtide | You, on a Mac | Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Granola, GitHub, Linear, Claude Code, Codex | Free during early access |
| alfred_ | You, on any device | Gmail, Outlook, iCloud or IMAP, calendars, Slack, Teams | From $25 a month billed annually |
| Fyxer | You or your team | Gmail or Outlook, and meetings it records | Free plan; Pro $49 a month ($37 billed annually) |
| Superhuman Go | Anyone, as an agent in every app | The apps and tabs you work in | Free with limits; Pro $15 a month ($12 billed annually) |
| Sentra | A whole company | Slack, Gmail, Drive, GitHub, Linear, Jira, Zoom and more, set up by an admin | Free to start; demo for teams |
How do they differ?
Lowtide works like a quiet personal chief of staff: it reads your mail, Slack and meeting notes on its own and keeps one short list in your menu bar, with drafts, reasons and due dates, and closes items when they’re done. alfred_ is an assistant you talk to on any device. Fyxer centers on your inbox and its own meeting recorder. Superhuman Go is a general AI agent that helps in whatever app you’re in. Sentra is for organizations: an admin connects the company’s tools, and people and agents ask it what was decided and what’s still open.
Can you build your own?
Partly. An AI assistant like Claude or ChatGPT, connected to your tools, can write you a morning briefing from your mail, calendar and meeting notes. You’ll maintain the prompts and connections yourself, it only knows what you ask it, and nothing keeps track of items between runs unless you build that too.
Do you need one?
If things slip because they’re spread across email, chat and meetings, yes: that’s the gap these tools fill. If your work lives in one inbox you keep on top of, Gmail’s nudges and a short list of what you’re waiting on may be all you need.
Questions people ask
Is an AI chief of staff the same as an AI executive assistant?
Mostly. “Executive assistant” tools lean toward scheduling and inbox handling; “chief of staff” tools lean toward commitments, follow-through and preparing you for meetings. Many products do both.
Will an AI chief of staff send emails for me?
The good ones draft and wait for you. Lowtide, alfred_ and Fyxer all leave sending to you.
Is Lowtide an AI chief of staff?
For your own work, yes: it keeps track of what you owe and are owed across Gmail, Slack and your meetings, prepares you before each meeting, and drafts every reply and follow-up. It isn’t a company-wide system.
